Accepting Yourself and Moving On
“Challenge! An essential part of your progress w/ building self-esteem & reclaiming health is about accepting yourself now, not 20lbs from now, when you have a better job etc. Avoid negative self depreciating remarks & instead celebrate the qualities you love about yourself. Make a list of them & post it everywhere. This isn’t easy at first, but the more you practice this behavior the sooner you’ll mentally buy into it.” ~ Jillian Michaels
I believe one of the hardest things about making the decision to be healthy, and doing something about it, is actually figuring out why we got where we are in the first place. No one chooses to be unhealthy, overweight, tired, or stressed out. We make choices based on our emotions, our surrounding environment, and life events.
Once we make the decision to “get healthy”… and everyone’s interpretation is different… for some it is to be thinner, have more muscle, or just feel better…. but once the decision is made and you begin your journey, you find the time to work out, you buy and prepare only healthy foods, you lose the weight, gain the muscle and feel better, then what? If we don’t tackle the reasons we got there in the first place, then we fall back into old habits and return to where we were.
If you do not have the support of family and friends then it will be easy to fall back into old habits. So once they start noticing the changes in you, you need to share it with them and encourage them to join you in living a more healthy lifestyle. Sometimes it’s a matter of surrounding yourself with more positive people, or asking those around you to support you, and not sabotage or criticize your journey.
Sometimes we have low self-esteem and for whatever reason we don’t think we’re worthy of being happy. We have to realize that no matter what has happened in the past, or what has been said to us, we can make the changes that we want to make and we are allowed to let that happen. We all need to accept ourselves as we are now and then move forward. You have the right to be happy. You deserve the right to make time for yourself. You deserve to be healthy. Find the things that you love about yourself and write them down. Focus only on the positive, you will overcome the negative.
Accept the whole challenge and jump into it with everything you have in you! Focus on the reasons that you want to change! Start today… not tomorrow, or on the first of the next month… do it today! Be the change that you see in yourself! Find things that motivate you… is it fitting into your skinny jeans? wanting to look good at the beach? need more energy to cope with every day life and stressors? Each and every time you make a choice to work out (or not), eat clean and healthy (or not), drink enough water (or not), and get enough sleep (or not)… evaluate your reasons before, then accept your choices and move on. For me? sometimes I just want to have a cookie… and sometimes there is no reason I can come up with… I accept the step backwards, enjoy the cookie, then move on. It actually helps me to recognize that now and then I want to splurge… but it doesn’t mean that I’ve blown my longterm goals. I don’t eat the whole bag of cookies… I”ve learned moderation… and I am stronger for it.
Be in love with who you are, focus on the good qualities within you, surround yourself with supportive people, think positive, have a can do attitude, and accept compliments when they come your way!
“You are not the product of your circumstances. You are a composite of all the things you believe and all the places you believe you can go. Your past does not define you. You can step out of your history and create a new day for yourself.” ~ Oprah Winfrey
