Fighting Fat and Getting Fit After 50

I recently hosted a “mini-reunion” at my home for my graduating high school class. We have kept in touch over the past 33 years and decided to try to get together on a smaller scale in between the larger reunions that are usually hosted every 5 to 10 years. It’s great fun reliving old memories and making new ones! When we get together it seems like time has stood still… we laugh, talk about old times, catch up on new things in our lives… kids, marriages, grandkids, jobs, retirement!
It’s a great time to reflect on where we are in our lives. The amazing part is how technology has allowed us to communicate so easily now! With the help of Facebook, emails and smart phones we have posted pictures, heard from folks who couldn’t make the reunion and been able to keep in touch in a way that was never possible before. We come from the generation of black and white television (of which there was only one in the house… and NO remote), boom boxes, record players, phones that had cords attached to the wall and pay phones that cost a dime.
I write about this not because I feel old though, because for some reason I don’t! I really feel young and have more energy now than I did in my 20′s and 30′s (of course I also no longer have toddlers or teenagers at home… hahaha). I believe firmly that it is because I try hard to have a positive attitude, laugh as much as I can, and I exercise and eat healthy! I have lost weight and feel like I am winning the battle against age and gravity! With the help of my beachbody family (including members and coaches), Tony Horton with P90X, Chalene with Turbo Fire, and Leandro with Brazil Butt Lift, I have been able to do things that most people my age feel are out of there reach.
It all boils down to “how bad do you want it”! How much do you want to have renewed energy, lose weight, be fit and toned? You yourself have to decide to make the commitment, put in the time and know that only YOU know how hard your working. How hard you’re pushing yourself. There are no magic pills, there is no easy way to regain your strength or take control of your health issues. In the beginning it’s hard to make the choice to give up sugar and fat and foods high in salt. When I started P90X I thought “what the heck have I gotten myself into!” I couldn’t even get through all of the jumping jacks (I know… pathetic right?… or at least I thought so). But, I pushed through, stayed sore, pushed play 6 days a week, followed the nutrition plan… and most importantly… decided this was not just a short stent to lose weight for a certain event (although that is how it started out), I decided this was a lifestyle change. I do splurge now and then… and then I get right back into my routine! As Tony Horton said “people are addicted because it works!” I also started drinking Shakeology daily. I miss it when I don’t have it. The nutritional value of this drink is hard to beat even with the healthiest diet.
So if you want to lose weight, get fit, tone up, reduce your blood pressure or cholesterol, fight diabetes… or just feel young and have more energy… step up to the plate and make the decision to get healthy. Then commit to it…set a small goal… something attainable. I promise you will be addicted before too long! Recognize that you didn’t get to where you are overnight, so it might just take more than a week to see some changes… but you will be amazed at what 60 or 9o days of a tried and true workout program can do for you!
