“End the Trend” of Obesity

12 July 2011 2 Comments

One of the things that I love most about being involved with Beachbody, is the effort that they make, and stress, of helping others to reach their goals toward health and fitness. There are countless numbers of people that have lost weight, lowered their blood pressure and cholesterol, brought their diabetes under control, and gained the energy to be involved in the lives of those around them.

Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater. BMI is calculated from a person’s weight and height and provides a reasonable indicator of body fatness and weight categories that may lead to health problems. Obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. In 2009, only Colorado and the District of Columbia had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%.

Thirty-three states had a prevalence equal to or greater than 25%; nine of these states (Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and West Virginia) had a prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 30%.

The animated map below shows the United States obesity prevalence from 1985 through 2009

I am proud to be a part of the effort to “End the Trend” of obesity in this country! All of us can do our part… make healthier choices in our diet, start an exercise program, be supportive in the efforts of those around us!

Encourage your friends and family to get off the couch, rediscover fruits and vegetables… eating healthy and getting enough exercise can make your energy level skyrocket. Improving your health and possibly getting off of medications for high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes will be an added bonus.

I’m happy to say that I am one of those that change their lifestyle and eliminated high blood pressure from my life. Thanks to Beachbody, P90X and the type of diet you describe, my blood pressure dropped from dangerously high, to optimal for an athlete. Great stuff Karen.
